So when I was out and about one day, I came across a sign that was advertising jazz. This seemed interesting to me as jazz felt like one of the more obscure things to see in Japan.

I personally did not attend this concert, but I think that for anyone wanting to learn English and is interested in a particular type of music, try studying words and lyrics that go with that music. You may find out great stuff.

So, similar products are not a new thing. There are countless products out there that bear some similarity to others and such is the nature of competition in business. However, this is generally legal to do and poses no problems.

However, sometimes we have what is known as a knockoff. A knockoff is something that is extremely similar to the appearance and presentation that it could almost be considered illegal, but sometimes are just different enough to avoid prosecution. The case presented here is “American Cola”. This is an obvious play on Coca Cola with the red can and fancy font, but it is apparently different enough. As a drink, it is OK.

Well, Japan has many zany things out there and they often times like to use visual aids to assist in the understanding of things. In principle, this is good, however to foreigners seeing it to the first time, it often comes across as amusing.

One example is in elevators with a sticker showing a crab removing someone’s finger. The idea of being careful around the door is good, but the idea of comparing getting one’s hand stuck in the door to that of a crab snipping off the finger is hilarious. In the west, I often only see things written without visual aids.

So, I was out and about the other day in parts of town that I do not normally go to and came across a display for St. Patrick’s Day. I am amazed that in Japan such a thing is even considered. I can understand major holidays, but this one seems so minor that I wonder why stores even bother to put out merchandise.

The biggest theme of it all is that everything is green.

Allegedly, people not wearing green may be pinched. Avoid pinching with green.
