Getting words right

Wednesday, November, 25, 2015

Hey there everyone, Jordan here with another Awesome English report for the week.

Today, I would like to call attention to an oddity that I spotted in a school of all places. It’s one of those many cases where Japanese and English have a different mindset and should learn not only a general translation, but the proper application of the language. This can generally only be done through experiencing real examples, so I’ll share such an example.

The photo that was taken and is being used for this blog post was taken at Aichi University. The photo states “Use the rest room beautifully”. (Note: restroom should be one word, not two)

Now then, doing something beautifully typically refers to some kind of art or creative thing. Sing beautifully, dance beautifully, etc.
Doing something neatly, however, would be more applicable to a job or organizing something.
However, this is a case where I feel more natural to say what we don’t want people to do rather than what we do want them to do.

The best thing to say here is: “Don’t make a mess of the restroom”

I’m proud to say that I did not make any messes of any restrooms that day.

Usage of under

Wednesday, November, 18, 2015

Hey all, Jordan here with another Awesome English report.

Today, let’s learn some vocabulary pertaining to something that is in development or under development as we will be saying in the blog post that is being written today.

The photo that was taken that is being used for this blog post was taken outside a restroom area and has erroneous English written on it. The correct English should have been “under surveillance”. This particular sign just mentions “A surveillance camera”, which is amusing, but not informative. For instance, are they selling the camera? Are they merely advertising its existence?

As I mentioned in the sentence above, the word they wanted to and should have used is “under”. Let’s look at some more things that can have “under” to mean development and what have you.
Under surveillance
Under construction
Under development
Under consideration
Under orders
etc…

And there you have it. Those are just some of the things that the word under may be used for to signify something in process. That concludes the blog posting that I wrote for this week.

Vocabulary relating to the water

Wednesday, November, 11, 2015

Hey all, Jordan here with another Awesome English report.

Today, let’s learn some vocabulary pertaining to the water.

I figured that a photo of the lake and vocabulary relating to water would be a good topic with which to talk about today.

These are some good words relating to the water:
Aquifer: Water that is underground
Bank: The sides of a river or stream between which the water normally flows.
Bed: The bottom of the river
Channel: An area that contains flowing water confined by banks.
Mouth: The end of the river where it empties into larger water
Source: The starting point of the river

I hope this has been educational for you. More vocabulary to come in the future.

New building construction near Nagoya Station

Wednesday, November, 04, 2015

Hey all, Jordan here with another Awesome English report. Every day, I pass by this construction site and every day it gets nearer to completion. The area around Nagoya Station is having two new, large buildings being built. The purpose of which is unclear, but I’m assuming there may be some shopping centers or offices (or both) being put in.

Anyway, the other night I noticed many barriers were taken away, which seems to me like they’re getting real close to opening up the area around the exterior of the building. I even saw a post office inside. There are plenty of lights and even decorative patterns outside. There’s even an entrance ramp for cars and installed, but not yet functioning escalators. This morning, they were flattening the ground outside and they’re installing sidewalk. There will be more space to walk around with soon.

Depicted here is a shot of the construction site.
