Sharks!

Monday, July, 28, 2014

Hello everyone, Anand here as always.

Hope you are all keeping cool in the crazy summer heat. ?We have been really busy at the preschool with several meetings and preparations, but we still find time to have fun. ?I, like any boy, was obsessed with dangerous animals growing up, particularly sharks. ?I decided that since we were doing a module on undersea creatures that we would spend time focusing on them. ?We learned different types of shark names, what they eat and what their different special points are. ?For instance, did you know that the mako shark is the fastest shark, or that a goblin shark can extend its jaws to catch food? ?The kids, even the girls, thought it was really interesting.

I am glad that even though kids play with different toys than I do and have more things to do with their free time that they are still interested in the wide world around them.

I hope that never changes.

Monkey Island!

Monday, July, 21, 2014

Hello everyone, Anand here as always.? Hope you didn’t get caught in the torrential downpour from yesterday like me.? I guess in this case the “marine” in Marine Day refers to rain and not ocean water.? In any case, a three day weekend doesn’t come around all that often and I decided to make the most of it by going to beaches and drinking a lot.? I have been to a lot of places around Chiba and Tokyo but I am still not too familiar with the beaches in Kanagawa.? However I managed to change that a little by heading to a place called Sarushima, which is a little island off of Yokosuka.? You can get there by a ferry close to Mikasa park which is a short walk from Yokosukachuo station.??

It was a little cloudy but my friends and I managed to have a pretty good barbecue.? To be honest, I am pretty awful at grilling, but we managed to salvage most of our food.? It always amazes me what Japanese people bring to barbecues – fish and squid and vegetables, but never plain old burgers and hot dogs which are the staple of a North American grill.? But I guess if you grill anything correctly it comes out delicious.??

After a little swim, a little hike and a lot of drinking my friends and I said goodbye to the little island, but I will be back again for sure.?

Making a Typhoon!

Monday, July, 14, 2014

Hello everyone, I hope you all had a great weekend! I worked on Sunday, but even so, it was pretty good. I managed to go out and meet some friends in Chiba. Thankfully the supposed typhoon we were supposed to have was just a sunny and hot day. ?I guess it was a stroke of luck, but actually I had been looking forward to the typhoon, because I wanted to do a lesson about them for our preschool. . .But you know what? Even though it was sunny and bright I did one anyway.

It actually turned out to be a great lesson. I had the kids watch a few videos of typhoons and I taught them what they need to do to stay safe. Then we took turns making typhoons with a cool simulator that I made out of pet bottles. I threw in a few BBs and let them think that I each BB was a Sunrise Kid. They all had lots of fun trying to make the typhoon too!

Then I had them stick typhoons on a world map. Unfortunately they all know I am from Canada, so they stuck all of their typhoons directly over my house. I guess I had better call home soon since Canada will likely be underwater within the week…

Stand up Paddling plus Yoga!

Monday, July, 07, 2014

Hello everyone, Anand back as always. I hope you all enjoyed the glimpse of sunshine we managed to get. Looks like this rainy season is showing little mercy so we had better enjoy all of the dry days that we can. I only had one day off this week but I managed to make the most of it. ?I love to sleep in, but this week I decided to wake up early and do a little stand up paddle-boarding (SUP). ?I tried it once in Hawaii and fell in love it with it. ?It turns out there are a couple of clubs in Yokohama as well. ?I signed up for a SUP Yoga session having no idea what that means. ?I tend to sign up for things without reading details because I like the surprise. ? But in any case, this club is near Hinodecho station. ?After a little stretch and a brief demo, we were off. ?I will say…Yokohama river is not exactly as beautiful as Kailua beach, in fact I saw dead crows, garbage and a dead fish in the water. ?However, it was still fun to be on the water with some fellow paddlers. ?We paddled up to World Porters and did some yoga on the our boards! ?I am terrible at yoga because I have all the flexibility of an action figure, but I was able to do all the poses without falling into to the water, which is a personal victory. ?If you have any swimming ability, I definitely recommend trying it out, if not in Yokohama, in some cleaner water, perhaps in the countryside.
