Wishing I was in Okinawa!
Thursday, January, 29, 2015
Hello, this is Anand with another update! I hope that you all enjoying your days off. I am still managing to make the most of mine in the new year. And I am trying to find creative ways to eat healthily and still enjoy myself. A lot of the problems with “eating healthy” is that people believe that it means we have to eat salads all day, or stick to things we don’t want to eat. In fact, I have been one of these people for a long time. However, I am slowly learning that lots of cultures feature healthy and delicious dishes if you know where to look. One of those places is Okinawa where they eat lots of pork and gohyaa. Despite also drinking some of the harshest liquor I know of (awamori), Okinawans are remarkably hardy and the longest-living people in the world. With that in mind, I have been trying Okinawan restaurants in the Tokyo area. They almost always feature my favorite dish, gohyaa-chanpluu, which I try to make whenever I have the time. I went to a particularly delicious restaurant call “Ichi” in Shinjuku this weekend which I think you should all try out. In short, just because something tastes good doesn’t mean it doesn’t have to be bad for you! Try and combine enjoyment and health and you might just go places!
That’s all for this week,
Anand

Taco Bell – So Much for Healthy Living…
Thursday, January, 22, 2015
Hello everyone, this is Anand with yet another Awesome English update. ?As I wrote last week, I have embarked on a quest to keep healthy, and one way I have been doing this is through healthy eating. ?For the most part I have done pretty well, with a few slip-ups here and there. ?I am cooking as much as I can and I get to the gym pretty often. ?I have also started studying running for the first time and have already picked up lots of tips. ?However, there has been some recent news that threatens to halt all of my hard work and send me tumbling backwards. ?Really, it boils down to two words- Taco Bell. ?As anyone from North America knows, Taco Bell is a chain of faux-Mexican fast-food restaurants that serves up cheap, edible Mexican food and while it isn’t known for its quality, it is certainly known for its quantity. ?In any case, Taco Bell restaurants will be showing up in Japan soon, and plenty of ex-pats are excited, myself included. ?I am not the biggest fan of the chain, but I certainly miss being able to eat large amounts of cheap Mexican food on a whim. ?In any case, what was once a noble and plausible New Year’s resolution seems like it is on its way down the toilet.

Healthy Living!
Thursday, January, 15, 2015
Hello everyone, this is Anand with another Awesome English update. ?I hope you guys are dealing with the cold better than I am. ?Recently my heater broke down so I find myself waking up all cold. ?How do you guys stay warm in the winter? ?If you have read any of these blogs, I am sure you think I am a health nut. ?While I enjoy going on runs, this really hasn’t been true. ?I have a weakness for hamburgers and fatty foods just like anyone else. ?However, I have been doing lots of reading on how athletic performance is tied to our diet. ?After coming in second among my coworkers in yet another Honolulu Marathon, I realized that there is a limit to what I can achieve through sheer running – I would have to adjust my diet if I wanted to improve my performance. ?I have tried to do just that. ?I am trying to cook more and I am trying to cook healthy. ?I am trying to cut out alcohol as much as a socialite can, and besides the occasional glass of wine after a night run, I seem to be off to a good start. ?As for food, I am trying to stick to simple things – chili, kimchi and pork and gohyaa-chanpluu. ?I can only hope that my performance in the Yokohama Marathon goes as well as I see it in my head with the new tools I have tried to add to my arsenal. ? Here is one of my latest attempts at cooking something decent, a little pork and kimchi simmered together.

Happy (fake) Holidays!
Thursday, January, 08, 2015
Hello everyone, this is Anand as always with the Awesome English blog. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and made the most of your time off. I wish I could say that I did, but I spent most of my time working and working and working. But the details of my work are kinda interesting. I was at Disneyland for most of the holiday, well, Ixpiari to be more specific. I was at Cafe Kaila, which is a pancake restaurant owned by the same company that owns Awesome English. I basically ended up at the cafe and spent it washing dishes or holding a sign and telling people how long they had to wait before they could get into the cafe. It amazes me how long Japanese people are willing to wait in line in order to get food. I guess it makes sense, because Disneyland is all about waiting anyway. Anyway, it was humbling work and it is a good chance to remember how good my life really is now that I am teaching again. Anyway, here is a picture of me pretending to enjoy Disneyland!
