Never Forget

Tuesday, September, 11, 2012

The 11th seems to be a day to remember and reflect. ?In Canada, November 11th is called Remembrance Day. ?It marks the day that World War I ended, and we remember those we have lost in war. ?But the 11th has taken on more and more meaning over time. ?In Japan, the 11th brings up memories of the earthquake last year. ?It was both a time of chaos and uncertainty, but also a time where Japan came together as a country to try and heal itself. ?Eleven years ago today, America had its own tragedy that we still feel today. ?I am not from America, but I am North American and I still remember the day vividly.

I was actually in high school at the time. ?It was basically like any other day, but then hints started coming in the America was under an attack. ?A plane had been flown into one of the Twin Towers, and then another one. ?Everyone was both shocked and confused. ?America was supposed to be the strongest country in the world. ?How could such a thing happen there? ?We all wanted more information, but it couldn’t come fast enough. ?People didn’t know what would happen the next day? ?Would there be war? ?Would there be another attack? ?And for people in Toronto, only a few hours from New York we had another question: Was Canada next?

It has been a long time since that day. ?America and the world survived a huge tragedy. ?In some ways, the world is a scarier place now. People are more scared of things and people they don’t know. ?In some ways the world will never be the same. ?But we are still going on. I know I will never forget the 11th, whether it is March 11th, September 11th or November 11th. ?I hope you spend the 11th remembering those who have lost their lives to tragedy, no matter what the cause.

Until next time,

Anand
