Holiday commercialization

Wednesday, October, 19, 2016

Greetings and good day and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

Vocabulary focus

So, the holiday season is upon us and that means plenty of fun times, meeting people, and for businesses, commercialization. In the US, commercialization of the holidays is a very big and prevalent thing. I was actually surprised to see it in Japan, though. I didn’t think Japan was big on Christmas in the traditional sense of the holiday, but more so on the aspects of dating. Still, one has to wonder if the holiday is truly about celebration or just a matter of spending exorbitant amounts of money.

In Japan, when the holiday comes around, I particularly enjoy the commercialization of fried chicken and will get plenty of it.

Nuance and zaniness

Wednesday, October, 12, 2016

Greetings and good day and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

Well, this is yet another post about a sign I came across that is trying to say something, but isn’t quite right. In order to keep visitors from going to places they shouldn’t go, many buildings have parts that only permit one way. For example, “entrance only” or “exit only”. This is done for security and to keep the flow of people going smoothly. The sign I saw was about elevators and said “the elevators can be used only for lifting you up”… What it should say is “the elevators only go up” or more simply: “Up elevator only”. The nuance I got from the improper sentence was something like the sole purpose of the elevator… Anyway, proofreading helps.

A good bookstore is your friend

Wednesday, October, 05, 2016

Greetings and good day and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

So, the popular place for resources is the internet, but being in a good bookstore has a certain charm to it that the internet can in no way deliver. Being able to physically touch the object versus a digital image of it feels good. So, while strolling around the store, I saw plenty of great study resources in there. The language section has lots of books, some of which are better than others. If you have any foreign friends, see if one of them will go with you to look at the books together.

Museums a plenty

Wednesday, September, 28, 2016

Greetings and good day and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

The art museum is a great place to be exposed to not only an assortment of different kinds of works, but also language that is associated with such works. Many good museums are multilingual and will almost always provide English and sometimes other languages as well. They anticipate getting visitors and it seems to be the norm for English to be the most foreigner-friendly language to be utilized. So the next time you are out at your favorite museum, try giving the other language portion a look.

Signage for learning

Wednesday, September, 21, 2016

Greetings and howdy and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

Well, walking around the park down in Shikoku, it apparently has some well-written English on signs. This is good because it’s not only in the appropriate style, it even has decent localization. The general idea is there, but with a natural style of saying things. I think that such places are good if you can take some photos and study the material later. Of course, while studying be sure to have someone proofread the photos to make sure they are indeed OK.

Correct, but not suitable words

Wednesday, September, 14, 2016

Greetings and hello and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

So, it’s a popular thing to use words that are foreign and try to convey some kind of different, cool image. Sometimes it works and the people doing so are none the wiser about it, but whenever a person from the country in question sees the material, they will be able to judge it properly. Unfortunately, some people don’t have anything proofread and get something that is correct, but not suitable.

I saw a case of “grab” the victory… The better way is “go for” the victory. So the lesson is, proofread things!

Anyway, this is the conclusion concluding the post of the week. As always, the difficult words have been emphasized in a way that appears just like this. That is the end of this chapter.

The heights

Wednesday, September, 07, 2016

Greetings and hello and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

We’ll do vocabulary this week about a sightseeing spot.

So, I went to a rooftop of a building and saw a great view of the surrounding municipal area. It was very neat to see. The rooftop also had a location that looked to be one for people to get together and enjoy an evening together, though I was there in the day time and was unable to partake in any such activity. What a shame.

Learn through reading

Wednesday, August, 31, 2016

Greetings and hello and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

I always say that learning through something that is not only of interest, but was created by natives is the way to go. Media like TV, books, and in this case: games are all good ways. I particularly like media that involves reading as you get to develop both reading and spelling skills as well. A lot of this media is written in ways where characters speak in a more natural tone, so you can be exposed to all kinds of language.

Historical places

Wednesday, August, 24, 2016

Greetings and hello and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

So the topic that will be introduced today is that of historical places, namely the castles. So, they are always fun to look at, but learning about the topic is a good way to become accustomed to vocabulary that you wouldn’t ordinarily see. If the place is good, a lot of things inside have information in multiple languages, so it is a good place to start. So try heading out to some of these famous places for the scenery as well as the information.

Slogans

Wednesday, August, 17, 2016

Greetings and hello and all that. It is time for another post for the week.

So the key point today is a word we use that is slogan. This is an expression, typically used in advertising, that has a way of standing out to people and is very memorable. Japan tends to do a lot of advertising, some of which is in English, although not always correct or sometimes nonsensical. However, I visited the US and saw more slogans and they were interesting to see as they are correct. One such slogan was on a chicken box. “Love that chicken” is simple and easy to remember. Look for slogans if you are abroad.

Anyway, this is the conclusion concluding the post of the week. As always, the difficult words have been emphasized in a way that appears just like this. That is the end of this chapter.
